BIOGRAPHY

The Supremes. The worlds all-time favourite girl group who gained the coveted accolade during their dominance of the music charts all around the world in the 60's & 70's. The Supremes had eight members during that time with each of the ladies contributing to the groups enviable record success of close to 20 million selling singles and over 20 hit albums.

Scherrie and Lynda's group is the only trio performing and recording today still featuring genuine members of the Supremes. Since their reformation in 1985 they have developed an impressive biography with credited recordings and polished performance around the globe performing at venues that have included London's Royal Albert Hall for H.R.H. Diana, Princess of Wales and Wembley Arena where they appeared alongside other legendary Motown acts including The Four Tops and the Temptations.

Sherrie and Lynda's group were invited by Motown to represent The Supremes on their award winning TV special, called "What's going on". Celebrated author and Motown biographer Sharon Davis of Blues and Soul recently wrote : "The trio is authentically keeping the legend alive..." LYNDA LAURENCE : now celebrates her 25th year as a Supreme. 1972 saw her debuting as their lead singer at the prestigious H.I.C. Arena in Hawaii. A native of Philadelphia, Lynda started singing at the age of four under the guidance of her father Ira Tucker - lead singer of the legendary Dixie Hummingbirds gospel quartet. In her early day at Motown she spent time recording with Stevie Wonder and features on several of his albums and hits including "Signed, sealed, delivered". Lynda continued to record and tour with Stevie for several years as manager and lead vocalist of his backing band. Other musical associations include James Brown, Joe Cocker, Ringo Starr, Aretha Franklin and Harry Nilsson. A talented musician and singer, Lynda features on all of the Supremes' hits collections and commented recently, "Scherrie and I are so proud to be part of the Supremes legend. We felt honoured when Motown called us to put backing vocals on a recently discovered Marvin Gaye track called "Sweet thing" which features on his new anthology collection- "Marvin was the Greatest"..." SCHERRIE PAYNE : Born in Motowns hometown, Detroit, Scherrie is officially documented as the Supremes final lead singer and she too celebrates over 20 years as a Supreme.

A talented writer and performer, discovered by famed producer Eddie Holland (Holland/Dozeier/Holland) when he heard her singing with her sister Freda Payne (Band of Gold). Before joining the Supremes, Sherrie was lead singer of the group "Glass House" on the Invictus label and fronted hits that included "Crumbs off the Table". Scherrie also recorded for Motown as a solo artist during the 80's and had hits including "I'm not in love" and "One night only". She also worked with many artists like George Benson, Jose Feliciano and Smokey Robinson. Known affectionately as the "little lady with the big voice" she first brought her superb vocals d electric stage presence to the Supremes in 1973 and quickly established herself as a firm favourite with the groups legions of fans worldwide. Like Lynda, Scherrie features on all of the Supremes "Greatest Hits" collections issued around the world and continues to play a major part in keeping the groups music and image alive... FREDDI POOLE : The third member of the group is a native of Dallas, Texas and raises in Los Angeles. Like Lynda, Freddie also started singing at the age of four in her local church and first performed professionally at the tender age of fourteen. Since then she has collected and impressive list of musical associations that includes performances with Patti LaBelle, Phyllis Hyman, Sammy Davis Jr. and Lisa Stansfield. Television credits include the "Tonight Show" and "Arsenio Hall". She has also recorded with Liza Minnelli, Lou Rawls, The Beach Boys, and Jermaine Jackson. Prior to joining Scherrie and Lynda , Freddi was performing extensively with Gladys Knight. Freddi's supreme vocal talent is the perfect ingredient to complete this legendary group.

Since reforming in 1985 the trio have recorded and performed with many of the giants in the music business including The Temptations, Edwin Starr, Martha Reeves and The Vandellas,Syreeta, Kim Weston, The Commodores, George Benson and The Four Tops. To date SCHERRIE and LYNDA's group have released no less than nine CD's. The music they record and perform today appeals to all ages. Credibly covering other classics such as "Sweet Freedom", "Give Me The Night" and "Somewhere Out There" and their recent reunion with EDWIN STARR resulted in their remake of the classic 60's duet "Private Number". The ladies recently completed the daunting task of digitally rerecording all 26 of the Supremes hits - many of which featured Scherrie & Lynda on the original Motown versions... Regular visitors to Europe and Japan the ladies also perform throughout the world and can interpret songs in native languages as witnessed by their recording of the Spanish language song "Suave" which features on their "Supremely Yours" CD. Other girl groups have come and gone to SCHERRIE & LYNDA'S Supreme trio continue to tour the world and have performed in major venues including London's Royal Albert Hall, The N.E. C. and Wembley Arena. Prestigious cruise liners including the QE2 and the Royal Caribbean Line plus numerous t.v. performances and video releases (Live at the Dominion/Legends of Motor city etc.). Their individual talents and Supreme experience are amply demonstrated in their acknowledged polished performances, giving true justification to the name of the world's most accomplished and best loved female trio.... WHAT THE PAPERS SAY....... Still Supreme An enthusiastic audience at the Tower Ballroom, Birmingham witnessed a true legend last night when The Supremes hit is stage and gave a dazzling performance.

The legendary trio of the genuine Supreme ladies Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence (form the 70's line-up) alongwith third member have maintained all of the original magic and more. Their show is crammed full of Supremes hits including "Where Did Our Love go" and "Stoned Love" -together with songs that bring their show into the 90's with a classy style... Their version of the Harry Nilsson classic "Without You" is spine tingling -and especially poignant for Lynda Laurence who became a close friend of Harry and is the only female to have recorded a duet with the star before his untimely death in the early 90's. The Supremes are in the UK for the next five weeks at venues up and down the country and they will be putting the finishing touches to their upcoming album "Simply Supreme" - due for release in April of next year. THE SUPREMES & THE COMMODORES Hexagon Theatre, Reading The Motown Sound came to the Hexagon last month featuring two of the biggest names in the business - The Supremes and The Commodores. The line-ups might have change for both groups over the years but they proved that the magic is still there. For my money the best of the two acts was The Supremes who proved from the moment they walked onstage that they could still get plenty of mileage from their classic catalogue of songs. Scherrie Payne and Lynda Laurence take care of the legend and their vocals soared through the timeless classics like "Baby Love" and "My World is Empty Without You". They made a point of crediting all of the eight Supremes and commented "We know that there are fake Supremes out there and we want to make sure that you know exactly who we are." This show is so full of class and tight 5 piece band and it's not difficult to understand why the ladies are kept busy around the world. The 60's Supremes were lovingly recreated, although it was the music of the 70's that really enveloped me in nostalgia.

For example, the sublime "Up The Ladder To The Roof" (taken from their CD titled Supreme Voices) has a new and imaginative arrangement and is an absolute stunner. You see, the beauty of the Supremes act is their sheer professional approach to it. They enjoyed themselves and that spread across into the audience and was reciprocate. It's that magical bond that makes their show stay fresh and alive. The legend is safe in the hands of this very talented and accomplished group who look and sound every inch the part. Their set closed with the vocally superb "How Do You Keep The Music Playing" (also from their CD) and their encore was a funky version of "Love Child" and "Stoned Love". The entire set was a terrific experience. All I ask is that next time around the show be longer than the allotted 50 minutes. Thanks ladies for a wonderful night. Sharon Davis Motown legends THE SUPREMES will be making a return visit to Cardiff later his moth with a new show and a new member. Since the trio reformed in 1985 through the efforts of legendary members Lynda Laurence and Scherrie Payne, the group have been working non-stop all over the world as well as recently performing aborted QEZ. "We do our best to give the public what they want" enthused Lynda recently. "We perform all of the Suprmes hits and always include some surprise items too. The ladies are currently busy putting the finishing touches to the forth-coming album titled Simply Supremes which will include their new member Freddie Poole and is due in the shops in April. You can catch the trio at the Gala club on Saturday 26th before they jet off to Japan to work with their good friends the Temptin" Temptations C.M.
